Ryan Atkins is in line to pull on a Wakefield Trinity shirt to the very first time in a short time when they host Super League relegation rivals London Broncos on Friday.
The 33-year-old centre returned into the club he played from 2006 to 2009 after 10 years together with Warrington Wolves before the August transfer deadline, but has not yet featured because of injury.
Atkins is now fit again and Trinity head coach Chris Chester is delighted to have the two-time Challenge Cup winner readily available for the battle at Mobile Rocket Stadium.
“He’s been a real positive influence on the band for the past three or four months since he has already been here,” Chester said.
“He’s been in all of the team meetings. He’s a player that has got that experience, he has played in the big games and understands what to say.
“That is something he’s likely not utilised to however the more experienced players we could get out on the field this week, the better for everyone.”
Atkins’ addition is the only change Chester has made from a week’s 23-16 defeat away to Warrington Wolves for his 19-man squad, replacing the injured Anthony England.
The equation is simple for Wakefield on Friday: Acquire, and they will be guaranteed a place in Super League for a year old.
But defeat would mean they’ll nervously awaiting the results of the 2 games involving the sides fighting to avoid the drop, Hull Kingston Rovers along with Huddersfield Giants.
Because the Broncos triumphed 36-12 in West Yorkshire manner back in May 26, trinity have won 11 of their last 12 home meetings.
However, their very first match back in Super League this season observed Danny Ward’s side victory 42-24 at the Trailfinders Sports Ground and they followed that up with another home win over Wakefield in May.
The Broncos know just finishing the hat-trick over Wakefield will probably be sufficient to ensure they avoid being relegated to the Championship.
Last Friday’s dramatic 20-16 win away to Hull KR ensured the survival struggle was taken by the club by the capital to the final round of head coach and the regular day Ward is aware of what’s online for all four nightclubs.
“It is madness and great to its neutral, but not too good for all those involved,” Ward, who’s called an unchanged 19-man squad, said.
“I’m not sure how many years in training I have left if it’s like this – it might be a short career. However, it reveals the quality of the contest and we have got a four-way struggle at the base today.”
