Ashes 2019: Joe Root praises England’s character on final day despite falling to defeat

England captain Joe Root praised his team’s character and struggle as Australia retained the Ashes having a Evaluation still to play despite falling to a conquer with.
The hosts began the day 18-2 needing to bat out 98 overs to pull off an improbable draw in a sold-out Old Trafford and Joe Denly (53) and Jason Roy (31) fought for 80 minutes before the latter was shot by Pat Cummins.
Though Ben Stokes (1) was not able to repeat his Headingley heroics, Jos Buttler created a fighting 34 off 111 ballsJack Leach laboured for 12 away 54 and last guy out Craig Overton spent just under three hours in the crease because of his 21 off 105 balls.
“I thought we showed great character, fight and belief in what we wanted to attain today,” Root said. “I couldn’t be pleased with this effort that the guys put in now.
“It turned out to be a resilient operation but unfortunately it was not enough. Just like last week in Headingley we thought and we try our hardest till the conclusion.
“You always can sit back and look at several areas of the game where you could have done things differently but from today’s point of view I am very proud.
“When you are in the place we had been in the start of the afternoon, the way the men fought as hard as they did, you learn a lot about your own team, it shows that the character and everybody stood up and played with bravely.”
Regardless of the Ashes has been gained with Australia, Root believes there’s plenty for England to play for with a draw at the show still potential and Evaluation Championship points on the line.
The England captain included the seam bowlers through the series’ dominance was showing Test cricket at its peak.
“It is tough to consider losing the Ashes at this stage but we will need to make certain we pick ourselves up and turn up at The Oval,” he clarified.
“It was another great Test match and it is quite disappointing and we have to make sure we pick ourselves up and develop for what is still quite a big game for us at The Oval.
“We have seen some superb Test cricket on the span of this show so much and I hope the exact same to be the case at The Oval, it’s still a huge game for us. We ought to be sure that we level the string and a Test championship is to play as well.
“I think every seamer has set all batters under stress throughout the show, bar Steve Smith. It’s been hard work but that’s Test cricket at its best.
“You expect it to be hard and you expect men to battle your self love and make life difficult for you. It’s been one of the summers where batting has been hard and you have needed to work for your runs.”
Watch day among the final and fifth Ashes Test between Australia and England live from 10am on Thursday, September 12.
